HOME REPAIR PROJECTS

Trace the gutter problem before pricing.

Overflow, leaking seams and detached downspouts may need different repairs. Compare bids on gutter pitch, hangers, drainage direction and damaged fascia, rather than assuming a seal alone addresses the problem.

PLAN THE REPAIR

A clearer way to plan gutter repair.

Leaks, sagging sections, overflow, and detached downspouts can send water toward the home. Describe where the problem appears and what happens during heavy rain.

01

Compare the proposed work

Compare how bids address pitch, hangers, seams, downspouts, drainage direction, and damaged fascia. A quick seal may differ substantially from correcting the cause of overflow.

02

Keep the details together

Photograph the gutters from the ground and note areas of pooling or staining. Keep drainage expectations and any fascia repairs in the agreed scope.

03

Questions worth asking

Ask whether the proposal covers only a loose or leaking section or also slope, downspout placement, and drainage away from the home. Clarify the material and color match, guard work, and how the repaired system will be tested.

04

Before you request a bid

Photograph overflow, separation, and where water lands during rain if safe. Note any stains or dampness on siding, fascia, or foundation. The water path can reveal whether other exterior repairs should be scoped with the gutters.

05

What affects the repair cost?

Ask about access height, the lengths being repaired, downspout work, guards, and any fascia repairs. Make clear whether the proposal includes cleaning, removal, or replacement. If additional damage is found behind a section, agree on how the contractor will document it and obtain approval before adding work.

06

Compare two gutter bids in practice

For overflow near a corner, one quote might cover cleaning and sealing; another might change a gutter section or downspout arrangement. Ask each contractor to explain the observed problem and the result their work is intended to achieve. Compare the drainage plan and included components, not only the number of feet quoted.

07

What should the completion record include?

Keep photos of the repaired sections and the agreed discharge locations. Ask how the contractor checked the completed work and what maintenance remains your responsibility. Confirm cleanup and any follow-on fascia or paint work before closing the project.

08

Are gutter guards included in the repair?

Do not assume they are. If guards are already installed, ask whether removal and refitting are part of the price. If new guards are proposed, request a separate description and price so you can evaluate that choice independently.
